Wildfires in Spain in autumn and winter: what to check
The end of summer does not mean the end of wildfire activity. To understand today's situation, distinguish recent satellite observations, weather-related fire danger and official incident reports.
Can fires occur outside summer?
Yes. MITECO describes a winter-spring BRIF deployment in northern and western Spain, operating during a weather-dependent period between February and April. See the ministry's information about wildfire reinforcement brigades. There is no single fire-risk calendar that applies everywhere in Spain.
Check your area today
- Open the wildfire map. Check both the update time and each hotspot's detection time.
- Review fire danger by province. For the official forecast, consult AEMET.
- Check the incident with the regional authority. Our official warnings guide explains which sources to use.
A map showing few hotspots can coexist with an elevated danger forecast. One records observations; the other assesses weather conditions associated with fire danger.
A hotspot does not identify the cause
NASA explains that thermal anomalies can have other origins, including industrial activity. Its FIRMS data caveats also advise against estimating burned area by counting hotspots. A dot alone cannot tell you whether a burn is authorised.
Our methodology explains grouping and filtering. Automated classification helps interpret observations; incident status and restrictions come from the authorities.
Compare seasons using comparable records
The daily archive lets you review past observations. Before comparing years, check that their records cover equivalent dates and use the same definitions. Detections, incidents and hectares are different measurements.
Missing records do not mean zero fires. Use MITECO's wildfire statistics for national reporting. In an emergency involving fire or smoke, call 112.
