Wildfires in Canary Islands
In the Canary Islands, wildfires mostly affect the islands with the largest pine and laurel forests: Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Palma, and to a lesser extent La Gomera and El Hierro. Heatwaves with Saharan air, low humidity and wind can cause very fast fires in the summit areas.
Notable recent fires include Gran Canaria in August 2019 and Tenerife in August 2023, which affected several municipalities in the north of the island and the Güímar valley.
Firefighting is managed by the island councils (Cabildos) and their forest brigades, coordinated with the Government of the Canary Islands and 1-1-2 Canarias, with national support when needed. This page shows today's satellite hotspots in the provinces of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, each province's fire danger and official links.
