Geography of Salamanca

Salamanca combines the vast holm-oak dehesas of the Campo Charro with the southern ranges —Peña de Francia and Béjar in the Central System— and the deep canyons of the Arribes del Duero on the Portuguese border. The climate is continental, with dry summers. Mediterranean scrub and the pine and chestnut woods of the southern sierras concentrate the wildfire risk, while the more open dehesa resists better. Fun fact: its university, founded in 1218, is the oldest in Spain and one of the earliest in Europe.
