Geography of Valencia

Valencia extends from the fertile huerta and the Albufera —a large coastal lagoon ringed by rice paddies— to the interior ranges such as the Calderona and the Caroig massif, drained by the Turia and Júcar. The climate is Mediterranean, mild on the coast. The Aleppo-pine woods of the interior concentrate the wildfire risk: in 2012 the great Cortes de Pallás and Andilla fires scorched tens of thousands of hectares. Fun fact: paella was born by the Albufera, whose rice remains an emblem of the province.
