Geography of Asturias
Asturias faces the Cantabrian Sea amid rugged mountains, crowned by the Picos de Europa (Torre de Cerredo, 2,650 m). The climate is oceanic —humid and mild— giving an intensely green landscape of Atlantic oak, beech and chestnut forests, meadows and eucalyptus plantations. Unlike the rest of Spain, many fires break out in winter and in waves, tied to scrub-clearing pasture burns fanned by the warm southerly foehn wind. Fun fact: Covadonga, in the Picos de Europa, was Spain's first national park (1918).
