Geography of Granada

Granada spans extremes: the Sierra Nevada, crowned by Mulhacén (3,479 m), the highest peak in mainland Spain, and a subtropical Mediterranean strip, the Costa Tropical. Between them lie the fertile Vega de Granada and the arid Altiplano. The climate ranges from high-mountain, snow-covered much of the year, to a mild coast where avocados and custard apples grow. The reforested pine woods on the Sierra Nevada foothills pose a high summer wildfire risk. Fun fact: Sierra Nevada is home to the southernmost ski resort in Europe.
