Geography of Las Palmas

The province of Las Palmas brings together Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, volcanic islands in the eastern Canaries. Gran Canaria, a true miniature continent, peaks at Pico de las Nieves (1,949 m), while Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are arid and flat. The climate is subtropical, tempered by the trade winds. The fire-resistant Canary pine cloaks the heights of Gran Canaria, which suffered major fires in 2019. Fun fact: the Canary pine resprouts after fire, a rare adaptation among conifers.
