Wildfires in Basque Country
The Basque Country has a wetter climate than most of Spain and a low annual burnt area, but it is not free from fires. In Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, scrub and bracken fires are relatively common in late winter and spring when the dry southerly wind blows; in Álava the risk increases in summer in cereal and scrub areas.
Forests are largely managed by the provincial councils (Diputaciones Forales), which handle prevention, while firefighting falls to the provincial fire services and emergency coordination to 112 Euskadi (SOS Deiak).
On this page you will see today's satellite hotspots in Álava, Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia, each province's fire danger and links to official information. Some thermal detections in this area may correspond to industrial sites or authorised agricultural burning.
