About us

incendiohoy.es is an independent project that brings together, on a single live map, the public information available on wildfires in Spain: NASA satellite detections, Copernicus burnt-area perimeters, fire danger indices and data from the regional governments.

It was created to answer a very specific question that thousands of people ask every summer: are there any fires near me right now? To do so we combine sources that are usually scattered, update them automatically every few minutes and present them by region, province and municipality.

What we do and what we don't

  • We show satellite-detected thermal hotspots and group them into fires, with their evolution, intensity and approximate location.
  • We show the available evidence: grouped detections, Copernicus EFFIS perimeters and matches with official sources. The automatic label “confirmed” does not always mean confirmation by an authority; see our classification criteria.
  • We always link to the official information of each autonomous community and of the national authorities.
  • We are not an official emergency service. Our data may be delayed, contain errors or be incomplete. If you see a fire, call 112 and always follow the authorities' instructions.

A network of wildfire maps in Europe

The project is part of a small network of wildfire maps that apply the same methodology in other southern European countries, such as Greece, Italy, Portugal and France. We explain in detail how we process the data on the methodology and sources page.

External references

The project is listed in the datos.gob.es application catalogue and has been linked by Tagesschau in its wildfire coverage. These references do not make this map an official service.
