Frequently asked questions – Wildfires in Mexico, real-time map

On this page you'll find answers about wildfires today, the Mexico wildfire map, NASA FIRMS (VIIRS/MODIS) data, FRP and detection confidence.

How do I read the real-time wildfire map?

Each point (hotspot) represents a thermal anomaly detected by satellites. From the filters panel you can select the time range (up to 5 days), the confidence level (low, medium, high) and the FRP threshold.

What is the difference between VIIRS and MODIS?

VIIRS (NOAA-20 and Suomi NPP) has a resolution of ~375 m and allows more precise locations; MODIS operates at ~1 km and offers broad historical coverage.

What is FRP (Fire Radiative Power)?

FRP measures the energy radiated by the fire (MW). High values indicate intense fires; low values may correspond to smaller sources.

What does the confidence level mean?

It is a confidence indicator: "high" = higher probability of a real fire; "low" = greater uncertainty. Filtering by "high" reduces false positives.

Source and frequency of the data

The data comes from NASA FIRMS. Updates depend on the orbital passes and atmospheric conditions. The page updates automatically.

Searching by state (quick guide)

The map covers the whole national territory. Use zoom and pan to focus on an area. States covered:

  • Jalisco
  • Chihuahua
  • Durango
  • Oaxaca
  • Guerrero
  • Michoacán
  • Chiapas
  • Veracruz
  • State of Mexico
  • Sonora
  • Baja California
  • Nuevo León

Prevention and behaviour

Avoid burning during dry seasons; do not throw away cigarette butts; keep your property's perimeter clear. If you see smoke or flames, do not approach and contact the authorities.
