Geography of Vizcaya

Vizcaya unfolds around the Bilbao estuary, between a cliff-lined coast, the Urdaibai marshes and mountains such as Gorbea and Anboto. The climate is oceanic, humid and mild, with a green landscape of pine and eucalyptus plantations, oak and beech woods. Wildfire risk, generally low, spikes during winter episodes with a very warm, dry southerly foehn wind, as in the 2022 wave. Fun fact: the Urdaibai biosphere reserve is one of the most valuable wetlands on the Cantabrian coast.
